To best save water at home you need to understand how much water you are using.
Here is a summary of different water use around the home:

- High: 3 gallons per flush
- Low flow: 1.2 - 1.6 gallons per flush
Shower
- High flow: 5-10 gallons of water per minute
- Low flow: 2.5 gallons of water per minute
Bath
- Full: ~25-30 gallons
- Half: ~12-15 gallons
Water Faucet
- High flow: 3 gallons of water per minute

- Other 2%

Having a good understanding of how much water each item uses as well as what the big hitters are on your water consumption can help you reduce your water consumption. For example, toilets, leaks, showers, and washing machines are major water users. Adding to the efficiency of these items as well as using them less (or fixing that leak) can have a big impact.
Ways to reduce your water consumption at home:
- Flush less - okay, so this one's a bit gross, but you can use the saying "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." The kids think it's funny and it's easy to remember. You can potentially cut your water usage from toilets down 50% this way.
- Take less or shorter showers - don't stand there enjoying the hot water. Get in and get out.
- Turn off the faucet when your not using it - don't let the water run while brushing your teach, washing your face, shaving, etc.
- Get leaks fixed right away - You may have an unknown water leak. Common sources of leaks in the home are toilets, sprinklers or irrigation systems, and water softeners. If the leak is really bad, you will be able to hear it or will see the results. Often, though, you can have a leak and not know it. Even a small leak in the toilet can lose 10's of gallons per day. To check to see if you have a leak you can 1) check your water meter 2) turn off all water and don't use any 3) check your water meter again several hours later.
